ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, ABUBAKAR BALARABE MAHMOUD, SAN TO THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING OF 24TH NOVEMBER, 2016 IN MINNA, NIGER STATE
Nigeria is a country where there is a huge deficit in accountability in leadership. Accountability is the concept that lays down an expectation that in leadership just like in governance, those in public office, who exercise authority on the basis of public trust, must be answerable, blameworthy and liable. I strongly believe that this administration will be accountable to the National Executive Committee, NEC, Annual General Meeting, and all our members because you and many others will be affected by our decisions and actions.
THE VALEDCITORY COURT SESSION IN HONOUR OF HIS LORDSHIP, THE HONOURABLE JUSTICEE MAHMUD MOHAMMED GCON, RETIRING CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA
I have known Justice Mohammed for many years since I began to appear before him at the Court of Appeal in the early nineties. But, I must admit, I have come to appreciate him even more in the course of the last few months when, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association, I have had to interact with him on more regular basis over matters affecting the judiciary and the legal profession. He has proved a very listening person, cautious and pragmatic. I have seen him very distraught by the recent events. Yet he maintained his calm and composure. I think his departure at this time will leave a huge vacuum in the nation’s judiciary.
It is important to note that the twin challenges of insurgency and militancy facing the North East and Niger Delta respectively are a threat to national security. Nigeria has been experiencing a high level of insecurity as a result of the activities of insurgents and militants. Although the 1999 constitution provides that the security, protection of life and property is the primary duty of the government, the Bar and the general public have roles to play in tackling the security problems in Nigeria.

I am delighted therefore, to make these remarks on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association, but also on a personal note, to express on behalf of my wife Hon. Justice Mahmoud and myself our sincere warm wishes to my Lord as she bows out of the Bench of the Court of Appeal.
